VegVoyages Foundation

Established by VegVoyages – Vegan Adventure Tours. We believe that travel should be beneficiary for both the people traveling and the community we are traveling to. For 11 years, we have been incorporating social – charitable activities as part of our adventures. Whether it is helping out at local grassroots animal sanctuary, community recycling program, providing school supplies at village school and serving up vegan lunch at children’s home, amongst other. We make it our responsibility to care for all communities that have been home for our adventures.

Up to this day, VegVoyages has continuously cared for and supported:

  • 4 Local Villages schools (2 in North India, 1 in South India and 1 in Sumatra)
  • 2 Children’s Home (1 in Bali and 1 in Thailand)
  • 6 Animal Sanctuaries (from Turtle conservation projects (Bali and Malaysia), bear rescue and rehabilitation center (Laos), Wildlife protections (Sumatra and Thailand), and other Animal rescue and rehabilitation centers (North India and South India)

13 Community Based Programs – ranging from providing free after school classes for local children, reef restoration’s projects, recycling center, center providing skills to disabled woman, providing prosthetic, orthotic and rehabilitation to those whose missing limb due to UXO and/or disability and empowering local woman from low income family to be able to generate extra income to support their families.

The people that we met along our journeys, the volunteers, the people behind the organizations, the children from rural areas that so excited to learn, the housewife who is very proud to be able to contribute to the household income, the young man with no legs but still full of smiles and dreams, the beautiful animals that are saved and recovering at shelters, amongst others, they inspired us to do more.

So we established the VegVoyages Foundation, a non-profit organization specifically to be able to do more, focus more on helping empower the communities that have welcome us in into their hearts and homes.

As a Foundation, our first project is the children and families in Jakarta’s low-income area.

Nicknamed the “Big Durian”, Jakarta is the largest city in South East Asia, and if you take the greater metropolitan area – it is the second largest metro in the world with an estimated daytime population of nearly 30 million people.

Our focus will be in the kids in an inner city “kampung” in Jatinegara (district in Jakarta) whose families in general live well below the poverty line.  Kampung means village or hamlet, but as it is used here – they are settlements that have sprung up over the decades.

There are an estimated 600 plus kampungs in Jakarta – where people live in an area that would be considered by many to be a slum (even the UN labels them that) – but it is not, it is as the word means – a “village” within a city, with all the aspects of a village for those who live there – including a genuine sense of community, cohesion and a sense of belonging.  Unstructured, unplanned and with-out planned infrastructure, families settled wherever there was space in search of a better life – with hopes and dreams, coming to the big city – not years, but in many cases – generations ago.

Helping children to get the supplies they needed for their studies and the resources to be able to get an edge to compete with the outside world. Helping provide good quality education, that is not only emphasis on books, but also as importantly, COMPASSION; so they can make better decision knowing that their life can make either positive or negative impact to not only themselves, but also their community, their natural resources, and the planet.
